Costa Rica's Moving Public Holidays Credited With Improved Tourism

(Posted on Sunday, December 24, 2006)

Source: Instituto Costarricense de Turismo

The ICT (Instituto Costarricense de Turismo) has just released a report showing a markedly improved tourism trade in 2006 (tourism accounts for 22% of Costa Rica's foreign trade, and 7.5% of its GDP). One of the points noted in the report, is that the recent practice of moving fixed date public holidays to the following Monday, has played a part in this improvement in tourism.

However, this practice of moving fixed date public holidays to the following Monday (17-Mar-2005), is being reconsidered (20-Oct-2006).

Questioned on the impact of this recent report, the Minister said that it would not have any effect on the possible decision to stop moving public holidays to the next Monday.
