The government said that the day of Ferenc Puskás’s funeral, December 9, 2006, would be a day of mourning, and that schools would be expected to remember him in lessons.
MPs held a minute’s silence in his honour in Parliament on November 17. Ferenc Puskás, the nation’s greatest-ever football player and key man in the legendary Golden Team of the 1950s, died after a long illness at the age of 79.
Known by various nicknames, including the affectionate Little Brother and the Galloping Major, Puskás was voted the 20th century’s fourth best player by the International Federation for Football History and Statistics for his outstanding displays for Hungary and Real Madrid.
