As a follow-up to the news item of November 22, it has been reported that the proposed banking sector strike by the Central Trade Unions of Indian Banks is likely to take place on December 14, 2006 (Thursday), as anticipated.
In addition, it is reported that trade unions demanding jobs and price cuts on certain commodities have also called for a nationwide strike on 14 December 2006. Although the action is nationwide, it will likely be most strictly observed in West Bengal state, where Kolkata is located.
Public transport in the city will be affected, and major airlines -- including state-operated Indian Airlines and private carrier Jet Airways -- have canceled flights to and from Kolkata for the day. The IT industry is also set to participate in the strike, although at least one IT union has stated that it will allow those wanting to work during the strike action to do so.
