Indonesia Announces Aidilfitri Public Holiday Date

(Posted on Tuesday, October 24, 2006)

Source: The Brunei Times

The government of Indonesia, the world's most populous Muslim nation, declared Aidilfitri to fall today after no sightings were made of the new moon at stations dotted across the archipelago.

But Muhammadiyah, the country's second largest Muslim movement with some 30 million adherents, announced last week that according to its astronomical calculations, the holiday fell on Monday.

The majority of Indonesians, however, will follow the government date to celebrate. Business is only expected to return to normal on October 30, when financial markets also reopen.
