The Iraqi prime minister, Ibrahim al-Jaafari, has declared that Thursday, February 23, 2006, would be a one-off public holiday, while Wednesday and Friday would see a curfew being imposed.
This was done "to get the people off the street", following the violence caused by recent bombings in the Capital and the bombing of the 1000-year-old Imam Ali al-Hadi mausoleum in the Province of Samarra.
