Nepal Scraps July 7 Public Holiday

(Posted on Monday, July 3, 2006)

Nepal government today decided not to observe a public holiday or hold the usual elaborate celebrations on King Gyanendra`s birthday this year, weeks after many of his powers were curbed following a massive pro-democracy movement.

"The cabinet meeting today chaired by Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala decided to scrap the holiday on King Gyanendra`s birthday which falls on July 7," a cabinet member told a news agency.

There will also be no official celebration of the King`s birthday this time, officials here said. However, staff at the royal palace will get a holiday on the day. Low-key ceremonies may take place within the confines of Narayanhiti royal palace as per Hindu traditions.
