The Netherlands Antilles federal Labour Affairs Administration has confirmed that this year, it would follow the Netherlands' handling of the rare cases when the Queen's Birthday public holiday falls on a Sunday, and that the Queen's Birthday public holiday would be celebrated in the Netherlands Antilles on Saturday, April 29, in 2006.
Until 1980, in the Netherlands, when the Queen's Birthday (April 30th) fell on a Sunday, it was observed on the next day (May 1st). But this was criticized by Labour Unions who did not want the Queen's Birthday celebrated on May Day, the day of international revolution. Thus, when Queen Beatrix succeeded her mother Juliana, the rule was amended so that, when April 30th is a Sunday, then the Queen's Birthday public holiday is moved to the previous Saturday (April 29).
However, the last time this happened, in 2000, both the Netherlands Antilles and Aruba refused to move the public holiday from Sunday, April 30th. Whether this year's change will be repeated in the future, when April 30 falls on a Sunday, remains to be seen. But in any case, this will not be an issue until 2017.
