In a snap decision on Tuesday, September 12, 2006, the cabinet of Papua New Guinea reversed its earlier decision, and to have an additional public holiday on Monday September 18, 2006, to compensate the fact that this year's Independence Day falls on a weekend.
The Government of Papua New Guinea had earlier in the year gazetted Saturday, Sept 16, 2006, as a public holiday and decided that neither Friday nor Monday would be a public holiday.
This is, however, not the first time that the Government of Papua New Guinea tinkers with the extent of the Independence Day public holiday (31-Aug-2005).
The instrument signed by the Governor-General does not revoke Sept 16 as a public holiday.
