Amid concern over persistent hate attacks and rising racism in Russia, Moscow's mayor announced on October 31 that he will prohibit a planned march by ultranationalist groups in the capital this weekend.
The mayor was quoted as saying last year's event (November 4, 2005) was a disturbing display of extremist views, as right-wing groups used the new holiday, Unity Day, celebrating Russian unity, to stage a rally protesting illegal immigration, where several thousand people marched under extremist banners.
