(Posted on Tuesday, October 24, 2006)

Korea Observes UN Day. South Korea's independence was largely supported by the UN, which is why Oct. 24 has been observed as UN Day.

UN Day became a national holiday in 1950. But it has not been a day off work since 1976, when the government cut the number of official holidays.
