First-ever direct passenger flights between Spain and Gibraltar begin, following an accord reached in September among Britain, Spain and Gibraltar.
The deal opens the way for air links between Gibraltar and the outside world. Previously, Gibraltar had air links only with Britain. Spain ceded Gibraltar to Britain in 1713 but never relinquished its claim to it. Gen. Francisco Franco, the Spanish dictator, shut the border in 1969 and it didn't fully reopen until 1985.
