Thailand Declared June 9 Public Holiday

(Posted on Tuesday, June 6, 2006)

Source: National News Bureau of Thailand (Bangkok)

Thailand's cabinet has declared Friday, June 9, 2006, as a one-off, official non-working public holiday to enable civil servants and other public members to go to the Royal Plaza, where His Majesty the King will appear to greet well wishers on the occasion the 60th anniversary of His accession to the Throne.

Note that, earlier this month, the government of Thailand had also declared, June 12 and 13, as official public holidays, but only in Bangkok and surrounding provinces (01-Jun-2006).

This time, though, the cabinet statement strove to remove any ambiguity by stating that "the holiday will also enable people in the provinces to take part in various activities being held at provincial town halls and district offices to celebrate the occasion".
