(Posted on Tuesday, December 26, 2006)

The People's Assembly, Turkmenistan's top legislative body, unanimously voted in favor of holding a presidential election on February 11, 2007, to choose a successor to the late President Saparmurat Niyazov.

The legislative body proposed a list of more than 10 candidates to run in the election, including Kurbanguly Berdymukhamedov, whose position as acting president should bar him from participation in the poll, according to the country's constitution.

Observers in the region do not expect one-party rule to be threatened, despite upcoming elections.
