Australia: More APEC Public Holiday Woes

(Posted on Tuesday, March 20, 2007)

Source: Sydney Morning Herald

Last year the NSW and federal governments declared Friday, September 7, 2007, would be a public holiday for employees who work in the Sydney metropolitan area, to help minimise disruption during the APEC summit. Following earlier reports that the State Government's one-off APEC holiday was in disarray, the NSW government will draft legislation to ensure no workers lose a day's pay as a result of the APEC public holiday, as "a small number of awards do not recognise a regional public holiday", provided the Labor Party is re-elected in the intervening election.

Sydney's eastern distributor and sections of the M5 motorway will be closed during the event, which involves US President George W Bush and the other 20 APEC leaders.

Mr Della Bosca said a re-elected Labor government would draft legislative amendments to prevent some NSW workers from losing a day's pay as a result of the holiday. "A small number of awards do not recognise a regional public holiday," Mr Della Bosca said.
