The Fiji Governing Cabinet has approved the list of the dates of public holidays for the year 2008.
The list, released by Fiji's Minister for Labour, Industrial Relations, Tourism and Environment, Bernadette Rounds Ganilau, is based on Section 6 of the Public Holidays Act, Cap 101.
In this calendar of 2008 Public Holidays, 4 holidays in particular do not follow the rules that Fiji has been following in the past. • Youth Day: renamed Youth and Commonwealth Day and moved from a Friday in May to a Monday in March. • The Prophet's Birthday has been moved from March 24 to Monday, March 17 in 2008 so as not to coincide with Easter Monday. • Ratu Sir Lala Sukuna Day was moved from a Monday to a Friday, May 30th in this case. • Fiji Day which had been the 2nd Monday in October was moved to Friday, October 10 in 2008.
The announced 2008 dates and modifications thereto were made in consultation with the Ministry of Youth, Sports, Employment Opportunities & Productivity (for Youth Day), the Shree Sanatan Dharam Pratinidhi Sabha of Fiji (for Diwali), the Fiji Muslim League (for the Prophet's Bithday), the Fiji Council of Churches, after its consultations with the Catholic Church, Anglican Church and the Methodist Church in Fiji and Rotuma (for Easter-based holidays), and with the British High Commission (for the Queen's birthday).
