Kuwait Protests Libya's Public Holiday Cancellation

(Posted on Tuesday, January 9, 2007)

Source: Associated Press

Kuwait protests Libya's three-day mourning for Saddam Hussein's execution. Sheik Mohammed spoke after a parliamentary session in which numerous lawmakers rebuked the Arab countries that described the executed Saddam as a "martyr" and a "hero."

Many legislators urged the government to reconsider its ties and financial aid to countries including Libya, Yemen, Jordan and Sudan. Arab political heavyweights Egypt and Saudi Arabia criticized the timing, but Libya canceled all official celebrations of the Eid al-Adha holiday and observed a three-day mourning period, including flying flags at half-mast.
