A top Shia leader, Mohamed Baqer al-Mahri, head of the Congregation of Kuwaiti Shia Scholars, yesterday urged the Kuwaiti government to declare a public holiday for the annual Shia rite of Ashura.
Kuwait’s Shias, who made the same appeal in past years without success, have been holding mourning sessions in mosques and worship places amid tight security measures ahead of today’s ceremonies.
