Next weekend, business leaders will formally request that President Martín Torrijos Espino restore the so called "días puentes" or "fines de semanas largos" system, in place from 1996 to 2000.
Under that system, public holidays were moved from their fixed date to adjoin the nearest weekend, hence creating long weekends that promote internal tourism and consumption.
Días puentes had been established by decree in 1997 by, then President, Ernesto Pérez Balladares (04-Jul-1997), but after a few failed attempts (01-Dec-1998), a law was voted in late 1999 abrogating the system of días puentes public holidays (01-Nov-1999).
