Panama Draft Law Reestablishing Long Week-End Public Holidays

(Posted on Sunday, October 14, 2007)

Source: Telemetro

Parliament's Working Comission approved a draft law that would move to the nearest Monday, public holidays that occur on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays, with some exceptions.

Currently the list of public holidays that would become movable is limited to January 9 and November 28, but November 5 and 10, as well as January 1, may be added to that list before the law is voted upon.

Días puentes had been established by decree in 1997 by, then President, Ernesto Pérez Balladares (04-Jul-1997), but after a few failed attempts (01-Dec-1998), a law was voted in late 1999 abrogating the system of días puentes public holidays (01-Nov-1999).
