Panama Bridge Public Holidays Reform Law Passed

(Posted on Thursday, November 29, 2007)

Source: Crítica en Linea

Bill 351 which aims to restore bridge holidays (días puente), has been passed after its third and final floor vote.

Starting in 2008, the public holidays of January 9 and November 28 will move to the nearest Monday, if they occur on a mid-week date. The bill was supposed to be passed in time for this year's November 28 public holiday, but its vote was delayed (22-Nov-2007).

According to that bill, the President may also make other public holidays into días puente.

Días puentes had been established by decree in 1997 by, then President, Ernesto Pérez Balladares (04-Jul-1997), but after a few failed attempts (01-Dec-1998), a law was voted in late 1999 abrogating the system of días puentes public holidays (01-Nov-1999).
