The socialist group in congress has announced that the calendario laboral del año 2007 (labor and public holidays calendar) would see no commemoration of any religious event, for the first time in 40 years, as to extend the laicity of the State to the Labor environment.
This will entail renaming the holidays, but not cancelling or moving them. For example, all references the the Semana Santa (the week before Easter) will be replaced by Semana de la Primavera (Spring Week), and all references to las Navidades (Christmas period) will be replaced by Quincena de Fin de Año (End of the Year Fortnight). No name change has yet been announced for the last religious public holiday, Ascension.
