Beginning this year, Suriname will be observing August 9, the International Day of Indigenous People, as a full-fledged public holiday.
Note that a similar proposal was made a dew years ago, in neighboring Guyana, when its House Special Select Committee met to review its list of public holidays, with a view of adding one or two more public holidays (23-Mar-2004).
At that time, the Guyanese Organisation of Indigenous People (GOIP) did not support either of the holidays proposed by the commission, but rather proposed that September 10th be declared a public holiday to honour Guyana’s Indigenous people.
