Earlier today, Syed Fahim Munaim, chief spokesman for the head of the interim government of Bangladesh, announced that the cabinet had decided to restore the date of August 15th as an annual government holiday and national day of mourning.
This follows last month's ruling (27-Jul-2008) by the High Court that August 15, the day of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's assassination in 1975, be restored as national mourning day and a public holiday.
The August 15 public holiday had been declared a public holiday in 1996 (01-Jul-1996), but this was cancelled beginning in 2002 (24-Dec-2001).
