Earlier today, Gibraltar's Chief Minister, Peter Caruana, announced that he was declaring Monday, January 5, 2009, to be a one-off public holiday.
The announcement was gazetted in the LN. 2008/111 (18.12.2008), which amends the recent () "Bank and Public Holidays Order, 2008" (LN. 2008/073), which itself specified the list of official bank holidays and public holidays in Gibraltar for the calendar year 2009.
This additional public holiday was declared to celebrate the recently announced victory of Gibraltar in a EU tax litigation. In the words of the Chief Minister, "the threat that Gibraltar has faced cannot be understated, nor therefore, can the importance of this victory to Gibraltar and its people and our future".
The last one-off public holiday to be declared in Gibraltar was the Constitution Holiday (28-Dec-2006).
