Indonesia Confirms Eid al-Adha Public Holiday Date

(Posted on Friday, December 5, 2008)

Following a meeting of representatives from Indonesian Islamic organizations and the Religious Affairs Ministry, in Jakarta, the ministry director of Islamic affairs, Muchtar Iljas, confirmed that Muslims in Indonesia will celebrate the Islamic Day of Sacrifice, or Idul Adha, on Monday, December 8, 2008.

In its communique, Dr. Iljas motivated the choice of date on the fact that the Moon was still below the horizon when the Sun descended on Thursday, November 27, 2008, or 29 Dzulqa'dah 1429 in the Islamic calendar, and that consequently, religious affairs offices in 27 provinces stated that they did not see the moon at the time.

Note that the Indonesian government, for its previsions (10-Jun-2008 and 31-May-2007), uses the MABIMS lunar crescent visibility criteria, which is closely related to the MUIS criteria used in Singapore and the JAKIM criteria used in Malaysia.
