It has been reported that Libya's ruler, Colonel Muammar Gaddafi, will cancel the October 7 public holiday (put in place a few years ago when the aforementioned negotiations stalled) and replace it by an annual August 30th public holiday, tentatively named "Libyan-Italian Friendship Day".
This follows last weekend's historical signing of an agreement whereby Italy would invest 5 billion dollars over the next 20 years to atone for its colonial occupation of Libya,
One should always take these pronouncements by the Libyan General People's Committee with a grain of salt as they are quickly issued when bilateral relations with a country improve, but often come to nought in the long term, as was the case with the officially announced cancellation of the American Evacuation Day public holiday, last year (09-Jun-2007).
