The Government of Moldova has approved the declaration of 4 days, January 2, 5, 6 and 9, 2009, as one-off public holidays.
These 4 one-off public holidays, when combined with the January 1, 7 and 8 annual public holidays, and the weekends of January 3-4 and 10-11, will bestow 11 consecutive days of non-working public holiday on the citizens of Moldova.
To compensate these 4 public holidays, the government has decreed 4 Saturdays that will be regular working days; January 17 and 31, February 21, and March 14, 2009.
Moldova's labour code (Codul muncii al Republicii Moldova) was amended in late 2007, to allow the government to declare similar extended new year/orthodox Christmas public holidays at the end of 2007 to give 10 consecutive days off work, from December 30, 2007, until January 8, 2008 (06-Dec-2007).
