Paraguay Pressured To Apply 2001 Law On Mid-Week Public Holidays

(Posted on Saturday, July 26, 2008)

Arguing that mid-week closures of businesses hurt productivity, the leader of Paraguay's leading trade association, the Federación de la Producción, la Industria y el Comercio (Feprinco), Max Haber, has indicated that he will soon meet with the government to petition it to start using its discretionary powers to move mid-week public holidays to the following Monday.

Under the terms of law 1723/01 (29-Jun-2001), the President has discretionary powers to move some fixed-date public holidays to a nearby Monday. But so far, these powers have rarely been used (29-Apr-2003 and 16-Sep-2004).
