Philippines Extends Year-End Public Holidays To January 2nd

(Posted on Wednesday, December 24, 2008)

Late last night, Philippines' President, Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, finally announced, through Proclamation 1695, that she had declared Friday, January 2, 2009, as a one-off bridge public holiday for both the private and public sectors.

Executive Secretary, Eduardo Ermita, further added that heads of government agencies will have the discretion over whether they want to declare a half-day public holiday for December 24, Christmas Eve.

This brings to an end a lengthy period of rumours and hesitations (see 20-Nov-2008, 07-Dec-2008, 16-Dec-2008, and 22-Dec-2008).

It means that with the regular public holidays of December 25, 30, 31 and January 1, and the special one-off public holidays announced earlier in the year (18-Feb-2008) and the weekends, people in the Philippines will get 11 consecutive days of public holidays, a record matched by Moldova (10-Dec-2008) and missed by 1 day by Russia (28-Nov-2008).
