Philippines Declares March 22 Public Holiday

(Posted on Thursday, March 13, 2008)

President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo issued Proclamation No.1471 declaring Saturday, March 22, 2008, as a special non-working public holiday throughout the country, to coincide with Black Saturday.

Technically, the Saturday between the Good Friday and Easter Sunday public holidays is not a public holiday itself. However, there is a long tradition of declaring that day a public holiday (19-Jan-2007, 07-Apr-2006, and 15-Mar-2005).

For salaried workers (who get both Saturdays and Sundays off) this proclamation has no effect, but for the large number of Filipino workers who are day workers, Saturdays are normally regular working days, and without this proclamation, they would not have been able to return to their home villages to celebrate Easter.
