Philippines' President, Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, has issued Proclamation 1463 which exempts the annual May 1st, Labour Day, public holiday from the terms of the recent Republic Act 9492.
Republic Act 9492, "An Act Rationalizing the Celebration of National Holidays" was signed into law last summer (25-Jul-2007) and turned the so-called Holiday Economics, or the practice of shifting holiday observances, into official government policy, and mandated that most holidays, except those with religious significance, would be shifted to the nearest Monday.
Under the terms of the aforementioned Proclamation 1463, May 1st would also be exempted from being shifted to any date other than May 1st, because it is a "long cherished tradition of workers, a holiday which trade unions fought very hard to institutionalize in the country and an international event that workers want to celebrate on its exact date".
