Puerto Rico Announces Year-End Public Sector Holidays

(Posted on Tuesday, December 16, 2008)

Source: Primera Hora (Guaynabo)

Puerto Rico's Governor, Aníbal Acevedo Vilá, has declared 4 additional days of public sector holidays for the end of this year. These 4 additional public sector holidays are: December 24, 26 and 31, as well as January 2.

The details of the governor's decision were announced by the Director of the Oficina de Recursos Humanos del Estado Libre Asociado de Puerto Rico (ORHELA), Marta Vera Ramírez, who added that since December 24 was already an afternoon public holiday for all citizens, civil servants would not need to recuperate the December 24, full-day, holiday.

However, municipal government, while bound to give their civil servants the days off announced by the Governor, can be more generous and decide, based on the 1991 Ley de Municipios Autónomos del Estado Libre Asociado de Puerto Rico, that none of the 4 additional public sector holidays need to be recuperated.
