On November 26, the government of the Russian Federation has released RF Government Resolution No. 877, "On public holidays transfer in 2009", which confirms the list of 2009 public holidays and additional bridge public holidays to be compensated by a nearby working Saturday or Sunday.
As per the revised 2004 public holidays law (30-Dec-2004), and notwithstanding recent attempts to change the early January public holidays law (16-Nov-2008), the period from January 1 to January 8, 2009, will be public holidays.
The decree also declares a one-off bridge public holiday on Friday, January 9, 2009, to be compensated by making Sunday, January 11, 2009, a regular working day. The result being that Russia will be on public holidays from January 1 to January 10, 2009, inclusively. The "Fair/Just Russia" party has tabled bill that purports to reduce the January public holidays to only 1, while declaring December 31st an annual public holiday, and adding a day to the annual May public holidays.

In addition, the Friday workdays that precede the 2009 public holidays that fall on a Saturday will be shortened by 1 hour. These Fridays are: May 8, June 11, and Tuesday, November 3, 2009, the only 2009 lone public holiday in Russia.
