Thailand Declares Extended Songkran Public Holidays

(Posted on Wednesday, March 26, 2008)

Thailand's Deputy Spokesman for the Office of the Prime Minister, Wirintira Nathongbohjarat, has announced that the cabinet had decided to declare an additional day of public holiday for the upcoming Songkran public holidays.

Initially the official non-working public holiday period was to last from April 12-15, 2008, and the new extended period will run until April 16th.

As this is the second year in a row that such an announcement is made (03-Apr-2007), the government, wary of creating a precedent, hi-lighted the fact that this decision was based on the fact that the 12th and 13th fall on the weekend and thus, that the extra day will serve as compensation.

As usual, the Cabinet has allowed the central bank to issue its own policy on the holiday for banks around the nation (08-Aug-2007 and 07-Oct-2003).
