Turkmenistan Cancels Niyazov Birthday Public Holiday

(Posted on Thursday, January 24, 2008)

Source: International Herald Tribune (Ashgabad)

The president of Turkmenistan has abolished a public holiday honoring the birthday of his predecessor, Saparmurat Niyazov, whose February 19 birthday was one of Turkmenistan's most important public holidays.

Note, however, that there is another public holiday, also on February 19, called Flag Day, which will not be cancelled.

In addition, the Women's Day public holiday that was moved from March 8 to March 20, a few years ago (19-Mar-2003 and 02-Mar-2003), has been restored to its traditional date of March 8.
