Turkmenistan Changes Dates Of Eid Al-Adha Public Holidays

(Posted on Tuesday, December 2, 2008)

Turkmenistan's President, Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, signed a decree setting the dates of the upcoming Kurban Bayramy (aka. Eid al-Adha) as Tuesday, December 9, to Thursday, December 11, 2008.

This comes after a contradictory earlier announcement (27-Nov-2008) that Turkmenistan had followed the lead of other Central Asian countries who had begun to follow the Saudi Umm al Qura islamic calendar for both Eid public holidays this year (21-Nov-2008 and 26-Nov-2008).

However, the change was probably made so that the, December 9-11, 3-day Eid al-Adha public holiday would be joined to the National Day of Turkmenistan on December 12.
