Ukraine Announces January Bank And Public Holidays

(Posted on Saturday, December 20, 2008)

Source: National Bank of Ukraine (Kiev)

Ukraine's central bank, the National Bank of the Ukraine (NBU), has announced a bank holiday from January 1-3, 2009. During that period, all commercial banks in the Ukraine will be closed.

In compensation, on Sunday, January 4, 2009, all banks in the Ukraine will be open as per weekday schedules.

In a move similar to that of 2005 (23-Dec-2005) and 2007 (29-Nov-2007), the Cabinet of Ministers had earlier recommended that all employees of the public and private sector (except for banks) be given the period of January 1-7 as public holidays, with the one-off public holidays of January 2, 5, and 6, being compensated by having the Saturdays on January 10, January 24 and February 6, made into normal working days (there is no compensation for January 7th, as it is already an annual public holiday in the Ukraine).
