(Posted on Sunday, December 14, 2008)

Zambia's President, Rupiah Banda, has declared a state funeral for former Minister of Finance Emmanuel Kasonde, and that the day of the funeral, Tuesday, December 16, 2008, had been declared a day of national mourning.

From 06:00 hours in the morning to 18:00 hours in the evening, flags will fly at half mast while public functions and activities of entertainment nature should be cancelled or postponed. However the day has not been declared a public holiday as some previous state funerals were (26-Aug-2008).

Dr. Kasonde had been widely credited as having engineered the economic turnaround that Zambia has been experiencing in the last decade, however after the recent death of President Mwanawasa he was not taken into the cabinet of the newly elected administration.
