The State Government of Australia's New South Wales, announced on Saturday that it would not commit to guarantee a day in lieu public holiday for Boxing Day, despite all other states declaring an official public holiday for Monday, December 28, 2009.
It is not clear yet, what the reason for such a change could be, in particular considering the fact that the Australian Federation, to which NSW is party, has recently harmonized the day in lieu rules for the ANZAC Day public holiday, with the effect that most of Australia will have an additional day in lieu public holiday for ANZAC Day in 2010 and 2011 (15-Jan-2009).
Note that the granting of days in lieu, in Australia, for public holidays that fall on a weekend, was only recently restored (see, for example, 17-Aug-2001, 08-Jan-2003, and 05-Jan-2002).
