Azerbaijan's Central Election Commission Press Secretary, Azer Sariyev, announced that Wednesday, March 18, 2009, had been declared a one-off non-working public holiday, on the occasion of the referendum to be held on amendments and changes to Constitution of Azerbaijan Republic.
This confirms the forecast that we had made last year, that the date of the March 18 referendum would be declared a public holiday (29-Dec-2008).
Note that the day after, Thursday, March 19, 2009, though it is officially a regular working day, is unlikely to be a good day to conduct business in Azerbaijan, as it is sandwiched between the March 18 referendum public holiday, and the 9 days of public holidays declared last week for Novruz (27-Feb-2009).
In fact, if the referendum is approved (quite likely), then it is conceivable that the next day, March 19, be declared a one-off celebratory public holiday.
