Chile Considering Moving Year-End Elections

(Posted on Wednesday, January 14, 2009)

A group of parliamentarians from both sides of the aisle have started discussing the possibility of moving the upcoming Presidential and Legislative Elections from Friday, December 11, to Sunday, December 13, 2009.

The goal of the measure, in the current times, would be to avoid having to declare an additional public holiday on December 11, as is the custom.

In addition, proponents of the measure argue that with a 3-day weekend, due to a public holiday on Friday, December 11, many people would head out for the coast, leading to a potentially lower participation in the elections.
