The Chinese government has announced that it plans to declare a one-off public holiday, "Serf Liberation Day", on Tuesday, March 10, 2009, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the end of the Tibetan rebellion of 1959.
The proposed public holiday has been blessed by top Communist Party leaders, and is expected to be approved at the second annual session of the ninth Tibet Regional People's Congress, which begins its session on Wednesday, January 14, 2009.
The only uncertainty is whether this one-off public holiday will be limited to Tibet or the the whole of China (regional public holidays are, to date, unheard of in China).
