China Announces Date Of New Tibetan Public Holiday

(Posted on Monday, January 19, 2009)

Source: AFP (Beijing)

China announced that, from this year onward, March 28, the date in 1959 when China announced the dissolution of the Tibetan government, would be an annual holiday officially called "Serfs Emancipation Day", to be commemorated in the Chinese Administrative Region of Tibet.

It is still not clear, yet, if this will be a public holiday or not. If so, this would be the first time an annual regional public holiday is declared in China. But, having the date set aside as a public holiday would allow the Chinese authorities to declare a curfew on that day to avoid unrest.

Note that, when Beijing originally announced the measure, the new holiday was scheduled for March 10 (11-Jan-2009), the date when the Dalai Lama had to flee Tibet.
