China's government news agency has announced that from this year onward, the Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR) would be granted 7 days of public holidays, to coincide with the Tibetan New Year (Losar).
Tibetan New Year will be on February 25, this year, and public holidays have thus been declared for the period from February 23 to March 1st, inclusively.
This is the second TAR-specific annual public holiday announced since the beginning of the year. Last month, China had announced that, from this year onward, March 28, the date in 1959 when China announced the dissolution of the Tibetan government, would be an annual holiday officially called "Serfs Emancipation Day" (19-Jan-2009).
Leaving aside any Tibet-specific reasons for this public holiday declaration, this seems to represent a new move by China's government to experiment the concept of regional public holidays, something previously unheard of, but which seems likely to occur in Guangdong Province this year (01-Jan-2009).
