The Tourism Board of the coastal regions of Ecuador has asked President Correa to extend the upcoming Easter holidays by declaring Maundy Thursday (April 9, 2009) a one-off public holiday to compensate the losses due to the impracticability of roads to the coast during the recent 4-day Carnival public holidays.
According to Carlos Acosta, president of the Cámara de Turismo de Esmeraldas, the number of tourists visiting the coastal ares went from an annual average of 50.000 to less than 2.000 this year, as most roads to the coast were impracticable.
Late last week, there had been rumours that the recent Carnival public holidays would be moved to the beginning of March, but in the end, Ecuador's Tourism Minister, Verónica Sion, announced that the Carnival public holidays would not be moved (18-Feb-2009).
Maundy Thursday, the day before Good Friday, was last declared a recuperable one-off public holiday in 1996 under the Presidency of Sixto Durán Ballén (27-Mar-1996).
