Ecuador's SENRES has confirmed that, despite recent rumors, only Good Friday (April 10) would be a public holiday, and that Thursday, April 9, 2009, (Maundy Thursday) would not be a public holiday.
In the weeks following this year's Carnival public holidays, there had been reports (26-Feb-2009) that President Correa would extend the upcoming Easter public holidays by declaring Maundy Thursday (April 9, 2009) as a one-off public holiday to compensate the losses due to the impracticability of roads to the coast during the recent 4-day Carnival public holidays, and that the government had refused to move by a week (18-Feb-2009).
Generally, although Maundy Thursday was last declared a recuperable one-off public holiday in 1996, under the Presidency of Sixto Durán Ballén, there continues to be annual rumours that the days will be restored as a public holiday.
To guard against this, the SENRES has announced that it would conduct surprise inspections of civil servants on April 9, and that, as in previous years (20-Mar-2008), it had re-opened its toll-free hotline for those who wish to denounce civil servants that are not at work on that day.
