Gambia Declares Public Holiday Tomorrow For CAN Victory

(Posted on Thursday, April 2, 2009)

Gambia's President, Yaya Jammeh, has declared a one-off public holiday for tomorrow, Friday, April 3, 2009, to celebrate the victory of the under-17 national football club (aka. the Baby Scorpions) in the Coupe d’Afrique des nations in Algeria.

Last year, a public holiday had been declared to "properly" celebrate the Gambian national football team's one-all draw against Senegal that qualified Gambia for the African Cup of Nations and the World Cup Football elimination series (12-Oct-2008).

The under-17 team's victory in 2005 had also been the cause for a one-off public holiday (22-May-2005).
