Gambia's National Assembly unanimously approved a motion to confer powers on President Yahya Jammeh, to declare a new annual public holiday, on May 25th, with effect starting in 2009.

The National Assembly conferred the powers onto the president based on the provisions under section 102 sub-section (e), and section 76 sub section (2) of the constitution.

Note that between 1958 and 1963, "Africa Freedom Day" was celebrated on April 15th. It was renamed "African Liberation Day" and moved to May 25th by the founding delegates when the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) was created in May of 1963.
