Ghana's National Democratic Congress, having recently returned to power, is pushing the President hard to restore the June 4 public holiday, which was abolished in 2001 by the New Patriotic Party government of John Agyekum Kufuor.
The June 4 public holiday, commemorating the 1979 coup by Flt. Lt. Jerry John Rawlings, was abolished by Parliament in extremis in 2001, after a lengthy parliamentary debate (01-Jun-2001).
Note, however, that one of the first announcements of Ghana's newly-elected President, John Evans Atta Mills, was that a Legislative Instrument will be sent to parliament to create a new, September 21, public holiday honouring Ghana's first President, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah (20-Feb-2009).
It thus seems unlikely that both public holidays would be added this year. The September 21 public holiday being less divisive a commemoration, we feel that it will be the one voted (if any) rahter that the June 4 public holiday.
