India Regional Electoral Public Holidays

(Posted on Monday, April 20, 2009)

Various Indian states are beginning to declare one-off public holidays to coincide with the day on which the current, month-long, national elections will be held in their state.

In particular, the Delhi State government has declared a one-off public holiday on Thursday, May 7, 2009, when the national capital goes to the Lok Sabha polls, while the Tamil Nadu State Chief Electoral Officer has announced that Wednesday, May 13, 2009, had been declared a state-wide public holiday under the Negotiable Instruments Act.

This follows similar announcements by the State government of Jammu and Kashmir (11-Apr-2009), and the declaration of an April 30 nationwide bank holiday by the Reserve Bank of India (15-Apr-2009).

As is customary in Delhi State, all liquor shops will remain shut from the day before, until 17:00 on the day following the election (04-Apr-2007).
